From Broad Street you are not on the mountain. You are under it. US 19E to the village of Roan Mountain, then TN 143 to the park, the gardens, and Carvers Gap on the state line. Often 10–20° cooler than the dock.
Tennessee–North Carolina line, about 5,512 feet. Park and step onto the Appalachian Trail toward Round Bald, Jane Bald, and Grassy Ridge. The essential walk. Free roadside / trailhead parking. Bring a shell. The gap is the pull-off; the balds are the walk.
Largest natural stand of Catawba rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense) in the world, on the Roan massif. Peak bloom is mid-to-late June. Boardwalks and short loops. Flame azalea and Gray’s lily are the other named flowers of the highland; look, don’t pick.
2,156 acres at the base of the massif. 1015 / 527 Highway 143, Roan Mountain. Doe River through the park, visitor center, cabins, campground, Miller Farmstead (National Register; tours commonly Memorial Day–Labor Day). Visitor center listed 8:00 AM–4:30 PM daily on the state parks page. After the September 2024 storm the park has been open with closures — Upper Campground and Bear Wallow Trail were still listed closed as of the park’s 5 February 2026 notice. Blue 2 trail reroute through December 2026. Check the hiking page before you promise a trail.
The Gilded Age hotel is gone. The ridge and the view are still there. The old road from the Roan Mountain depot is the ancestor of the drive you make now.
